My banjos, as of January, 2007

Posted 1/13/2007 6:46:10 PM

From left to right...

  • A no-name banjo-uke. Probably from the 1920s. It has a skin head and nylon strings. It's playable, but it sounds very tinny. It's pretty much a wall-hanger.
  • Bart Reiter Standard fretless. It came with steel strings, but I switched to Nylguts. The skin head gives it a nice plunky sound.
  • A no-name banjo from the 1890s. This probably cost less than $20 when it was new. I bought it on eBay for around $200. It's very playable, and sound pretty good with Nylgut strings.
  • Deering Vega Old-Time Wonder. Steel strings and a Fiberskin head. This is my main banjo, and it gets 90% of my playing time.
  • A fretless gourd banjo made by Jeff Menzies. It's a fun banjo and sounds pretty good. But the gourd is just too big for my liking -- which makes it uncomfortable to play.

J-Walk, isn't your banjo arsenal photo overdue for an update?
