Hi y’all -
So I’m starting to have those Impotent Banjo dreams - you know, where you’re wandering around a courtyard in which various musicians have set up, and you finally find a guitar player who says yeah, he might be able to play some old-time stuff, and you sit down and are just unpacking your banjo, when another person with a banjo steps in front of you and starts playing BLUEGRASS really really loudly, and you’re trying to get your banjo strap over your shoulder but the strap has gotten kind of tangled, or is coming unravelled, and you can’t seem to get the banjo on right, it’s upside down or backwards or something, and then you start to tune it and you find it has about 27 strings, most of which are old or broken, and don’t seem to actually be connected to the tuning peg, or to lie on top of the fretboard, so it’s impossible to play even if you KNOW you really do know how to play, and then the concert arena - oh, did I mention that you’re now in a concert arena, like the old Boston Garden, only you’re sitting in the god seats and there’s not room to play your banjo even if it was actually not falling apart, and even if you had it in your hands, because suddenly you realize that you left it ... somewhere ... and that you’re supposed to play it for a NEFFA workshop in 5 minutes, only you’re not sure where your workshop is supposed to be, or who you’re supposed to be playing with ...
At this point I generally wake up with my heart racing, wanting to go back into the dream to make it all come out right in the end, but I have to get up and eat breakfast and go to work, when really all I want to do is play that damn banjo. Or at least take it out of the case and make sure the 5th-string peg really hasn’t fallen out.
