ON HOLD PENDING PAYMENT.This is a vintage Kay 5 string open back banjo that has seen a lot of use before having been stored for many years. Probably made in the 1950s, judging by the asymmetrical headstock. Still has a little set list taped inside the pot and the tune titles are definitely hootenanny era. One piece mahogany neck has major finish wear, as does the headstock which is missing the decal (some tiny flecks remain that make me believe it was the typical gold decal and no nail holes from the later style logo). Age is approximate but they totally changed the headstock in the early 1960s and went to geared guitar tuners whereas this one has old friction pegs. The metal 5th string peg could be replaced. There are a couple of eyelets added to the sides for an old string strap (strap missing).Sixteen brackets. The tailpiece is tarnished and is actually for a 6 string banjo but it works (although the 1st string does get a bit close to the edge up the neck). The first three frets show a lot of wear although I don't notice any buzzing there. There are a couple of old small holes in the fingerboard near the 5th string from old spikes, and one small nail still there. Neck looks pretty straight. Head is dirty, and could also use a little tightening. Bridge feet were sanded down some so action is pretty low right now. Old soft case is a little big as intended for a resonator but functional. Sounds pretty good, plays pretty well but honestly there are a lot of better banjos on the market. However, as a folk-era survivor it does have some charm. Price is OBO, just clearing out some odds and ends while mostly home these days.
