A while back I ordered a wooden top banjo from Terry Mead (http://tmeadbanjos.com/banjos.htm ). I wanted something small, light and quiet for traveling. The banjo Terry made for me is left-handed with a cedar top and 24 3/4" scale. And it is exactly what I wanted.
You can hear it in action here -- https://soundcloud.com/rodeworks/lulu-shout . Balance-wise it is heavy on the treble side, but pretty much what I expected out of a wooden-top instrument. It reminds me more of a dulcimer tone, which is fine too. I keep it at my office, ready for lunch-time picking.
