I have been playing a little while now, and I have the privilege of playing on Wednesday evenings with a great bunch of folks at the Doylestown Jam here in PA. I have noticed a good many banjo players there, and a good many different banjos from different makers.
I can get a decent sound out my axe, but it just doesn’t come up to snuff as compared to many of my compatriot’s models. Even my instructor has a wonderful sounding Huber Lancaster, and it certainly sounds far superior to my meager instrument. Of course my instructor has told me many times over that my banjo is just fine for me right now, and that when the time is right, I will know when to upgrade. Well, the time may be at had, so I have been searching and researching various models from many different sources. My first love at one time would have been a Gibson Mastertone, but after hearing my instructors Huber, I was hooked – hook, line and sinker! But then again…..many of my colleagues have acquired a Stelling and they sure have a wonderful sound as well. So, my dilemma is that right now I can’t justify the large layout for either a Huber, or a Stelling (my wife and I are in the process of building another home). I was considering a instrument that would be a stepping stone to one of the aforementioned beauties, and I have set my sights on an OB-250+. I have seen many Gold Tone’s out there, but have never tried one before, and I sure could use anyone’s advice as to whether I’m just chasing my tail, or should I wait for the Holy Grail?
