I like to use these in the key of G to transition into either a Gmaj7 or D7 chord. I've noticed that this chord of the G major harmonic system often goes unused, and mostly for good reason, but it can be a nice tool in certain cases.
I've attached a tab containing each lick and some corresponding audio

Nice licks. The third one is movable, and useful in several locations for other diminished and dominant 7th chords.
I have to disagree a bit about the underused nature of the chord and say there's no good reason to avoid F# diminished in key of G -- or any time when the underlying chord is D7. Since the three notes of the F# diminished triad (F# A C) are three-fourths of a D7 chord, F#dim licks are in effect D7 licks. F#dim simply lacks the D7 root note. Think of it as one more partial chord.

Old Hickory You're spot on regarding the relationship between D7 and F#dim. I just think this chord requires a *tiny* bit more hesitance when composing or improvising, since it has the potential to sound (overly) dissonant if not used appropriately.
But I'm glad to see there are other banjo players who know their chords and aren't afraid to use the harmonic system outside of the I,IV,V, vi :)

Would you happen to have tabs of some songs in which these licks are used? I'd be interested to hear them in context.
