Ralph recorded this when he was with the Stanley Brothers. Stoney Creek, Salt Creek, Salt River, tom-A-to, To-MAH-to, call it whatever you like.
Ralph makes this jam standard his own. its got a really quirky intro timing-wise, and he starts the tune by playing part B first. its really a very tasteful break with lots of Ralph-isms.
adding a link to the tune ,which is at 14:25 in the video.

It's interesting that Ralph would have recorded Salt Creek and called it Stoney Creek. The Stoney Creek that I know is the classic instrumental by Jim & Jesse and it's not Salt Creek with a different name.

I suspect that sometime between the time when Ralph did the recording and when the record was published, someone chose the wrong creek for the title of the song on the record jacket.
Several years ago at an IBMA convention workshop, a guy asked Del McCoury what the difference was between a creek and breakdown. Del didn't have a clue what the guy was talking about. It turned out that because there are so many songs with "creek" in the title, the guy thought it was some kind of Bluegrass song sub-genre.

Gary-
I've just started learning Salt Creek, but hadn't been able to find tab for an arrangement I liked. This arrangement is A LOT of fun.
Thanks for posting.

Speaking of Salt Creek, was the version with Bill Keith in Monroe's band the first recording of it?

Youre right. It IS a lot of fun to play. It drives. John hickman has a great recorded version but he calls it salt river. The masters of the 5 string banjo book had tab for it .
