In these Hee Haw videos, Roy Clark's banjo looks huge compared to the others. He was the first "celebrity" I ever shook hands with when I was about 13, and I remember him as a big, big guy. I recall his right hand, especially, because it completely engulfed mine, and I always thought I had big hands, too.
But the banjo he played in the old Hee Haw videos makes him look downright average size.
Does anyone know what kind it is?

Thanks!

Im not sure right off hand but it could be because you were small? He is listed at a 5"11 but i would say he was a bit shorter than that so not a big guy

Looks like a regular Mastertone with an 11" head, same size as Bobby's.

I always remembered the RB 800 myself, although this doesn't appear to be that banjo. Great video post though, good to see Bobby & Roni

In this video, Roy is definitely playing his RB-800. What is more interesting, Roni Stoneman IS NOT playing the bowtie RB-250 that she became famous for playing! Can't tell what she is playing. Bobby Thompson looks to be playing his ODE style C.

I love the suit in this picture. It's the real reason I wanted to play the banjo. To be able to wear snappy outfits like this!

Roni played a Strom in that video. Bobby is playing his presentation Baldwin which he always called a Model E prototype.

In that video Roy has his late 1960's RB800 Gibson in Natural finish (some call it blonde finish). Actually Roy is not that bad of a banjo picker but when you stand him up beside Bobby Thompson he's pretty bad.

....if you notice the peghead on Roy's banjo is very wide compare to the standard "double-cut" pegheads...this was due to Gibson wanting to have enough room to put Scruggs pegs there ...I reckon they hadn't heard of Keith-tuners yet!!!!!!....peace

If you would have asked this last week I could have gotten, as Paul Harvey would have said, the rest of the story. I jammed with Roy Clark Jr Monday and could have asked about his dads banjos. Roy lives near me and I see him every now and then, hes a pretty good old time fiddler and hes very interested in the history of the fiddlers and tunes as well. I have been going to ask him about his dads banjos cause I'v always heard his dad had a All American that I assumed was a reissue but hey ya never know LOL

I love those Vegas that Grampa Jones and Stringbean were playing.

On the very first Hee Haw show, Roy Clark played ( or pretended to play) a Vega he borrowed from Grandpa.
