After futzing with a Gold Tone banjo mute for a few weeks and wanting to see if there was an easier-to-use, more effective, and better sounding banjo mute out there, I decided this weekend to try one of Mike's Mutes (here on the BHO at http://www.banjohangout.org/classif...asp?cid=3113).

I ordered it on Sunday and received it, via USPS first class the following Wednesday. It's a great product - it's easy to install, easy to remove, and doesn't damage the bridge or change its position (unlike the Gold Tone). Most importantly, it really, really mutes the volume of the banjo to where you can't hear it outside of the room you're in. Comparatively speaking, it mutes it to below the level of a fingerpicked guitar; a normal conversation is louder. Tonally, it's very nice. Whereas the Gold Tone sounds really harsh and buzzy, Mike's makes the banjo sound something like a very quiet harpsichord. I got it to preserve domestic harmony, but I like its sound well enough that I'll probably use it even when nobody's around. Definitely worth the money, and Mike was as fast on shipping it as could be without flying here from Utah to hand-deliver it.
