Mellower sound than most banjos. But sounds more "banjo like" whithout the resonator.

I bought this already setup from the store. However, this banjo is easily upgraded and tweeked. However, with the guitar style tuners I'm conserned about how to put in Scruggs tuners.

This is where this banjo shines. I've put my banjo through hell. Its been thrown off and on moving trains, been trecked through the rain while walking, and everything else possible. Most banjos I've encountered haven't survived this abuse, but this Fender has. I left it at a friends house for 6 months, then had it shipped across the country. When I got it back it was only slightly out of tune.

The bridge that came with it wittled away at the first string early on. The tailpeice is slightly warped, and the resinator stripped away at the connecting points to the rim. However, as I said I put this banjo through hell.

First off I have yet to have a dislike. I know that everyone that owns his or hers banjo thinks their's is the best. But if your after that "growly" sort of loose pre-war Gibson sound your not going to find a better instrument.......period. The lower notes are powerful and the notes up the neck are just as sweet and bright at the 19th and 21st frets as they are down the neck. The sustain up and down the neck is well balanced, but doesn't over do it and get that obnoxious "ringing" some banjos do. Having played two other maple banjos I must admit I am sold forever on the rich, full, and much more balanced sound of mahogany. What I continually find amazing is how you can literally feel the resonance of sounds through the resonator and even into the neck.

Setup

The banjo was setup by Ronnie Bales when I got it. The strings were lowered, of course, but Ronnie had marked the "sweet" spot for the bridge as he had played it in his shop. Ronnie is fanatical about his banjos and won't ship one until he feels the banjo has just about settled down for the most part. He sent my banjo with one of his bridges and as we have discussed at some length, it seems that at least on these mahogany instruments that bridges with fewer growth rings makes a considerable difference. The head was set up to roughly a G# that is right at 90 on the Drum Dial drum tuning instrument. I have had to re-tighten my head once so far to get a consistent reading on my Drum Dial and also had to move the bridge up about a 1/16 of an inch. The action is perfect for me and Ronnie really tries to work closely with you on that. He really is amazing how he can visualize just what your after, but continually reminds you that if it is not right to send it back and he will recut it, at NO CHARGE. The only thing that I warn you of is that he packs his banjos very carefully and just make sure to remove the resonator and remove ALL THE BUBBLE WRAP between the coordinating rods and the banjo head.

Setup Rating

10

Appearance

To say that this banjo is easy on the eyes would be a considerable understatement. The attention to deal and extreme craftsmanship is reflected in the flawless finish you will find. Ronnie cuts his own veneers for all of his resonators and only after studying the piece of wood for its greatest esthetics. The inlaying is precise and finished meticulously. About the only way to describe the depth you will find in his finishes is much like the if you've ever been to a crystal clear lake. If you've ever stared into the water from the shore of a sparkling clear lake with the sun shinning through it and that optical sensation of depth you realize is much the effect you get from the many coats of lacquer Ronnie insists on using

Appearance Rating

All the hardware is from Prucha, unless you send your own. I sent him a full set of Keith D-Tuners, so that is the only difference on mine. Ronnie would use Keith tuners but has chosen another brand to try and keep his prices down, but will use what ever you want. The rest is all hand made by Ronnie Bales. I don't have the vocabulary to quite describe the increadible finish of his banjos. LIke I recently posted, Ronnie DOES NOT use fillers or sealers as these are all plastic. He uses all nitrocellose lacquers and it takes him days of spraying, sanding, and reapplying coat after coat of lacquer. This is the way any fine musical instrument should really be made. That is one of the reasons that the old Martins have gained such value. The lacquer is not just a protective coating, but is part of the actual instrument and has to conform, shrink and expand, and age along with the wood that the instrument was made from. This is one of the reasons that "nothing really does ring like a Bales". The staining he uses along with this lacquer creates a virtual depth in this mahogany that I have never seen before. Also finishes like this, if you do mar it can be repaired and buffed out usually with few issues or problems. `Most mass produced instruments use polyurethane and UV finishes that can be applied quickly and moved on out with little regard for the tonality. Its the "bottom line" their after, not sound.

Customer Service

Thesre instruments are guaranteed for life, or as long as Ronnie is around to service them. Ronnie and his wife Myra are two of the nicest folks you'll ever meet. You would think that they were lending out one of their kids when they sell you a banjo. He tells everyone, that he'll give you your money back if you don't like it. How can you argue with that?

Customer Service

10

Components

There is nothing that Ronnie puts on his banjos that he sells that he wouldn't or doesn't have on his own personal banjos. Ronnie was in the construction business for years before this and knows and appreciates quality parts, materials and workmanship. He personally goes out to small lumber mills and hand picks the wood he uses. Even then he will only cut and use the wood where the grain is right for what ever he is making at that time. Where most manufacturers could get 20 necks out of a board, Ronnie might get only 10 and then might cull even from that lot. He has now started working with Bill Blaylock on his own signature tone rings From the sounds of this first one there are going to be some sad faced over priced trendy tone ring owners. I personally have Blaylock Bear Tracks/J. D. Crowe ring .and wouldn't trade or change for anything, but I might get another Bales mahogony with Ronnie's signature ring.

Overall Comments

I would recommend any of the Bales banjos to anyone. I have told Ronnie that I really believe that there is going to be some banjo players looking in the mirror and wondering why they dropped 6 figures on an pre-war Gibson when they start hearing one of the Bales banjos. To say I would buy another Bales if mine were stolen is an understatement. I'm about to order my second one just in case....does that tell you something? The average price of a Bales right now is about $3995.00. To me that is unbelievable! What your buying is SOUND.........not a load of bobbles, bangles, glitz and glitter that does nothing unless your into "eye candy". Do yourself and your audience a favor and check out Bales Banjos.............

I was upgrading from a very poor grade starter banjo, and from my favoured style of play, I was recommended a 'frailing banjo'.
This Gold Tone BC-350 did not disappoint. A very loud sound for an open back banjo, but also slightly plunky for that old time tone.

Setup

The banjo was selected by the shop tech as the best set up and most playable of the models available. It arrived with a very nice, playable action (not too low).
I'm none to experienced with banjos so far, but it played like a dream right out of the box for me.

I love the look of this banjo - attractive blonde maple rim and neck, and beautiful striped ebony fretboard and headstock faceplate. The fretboard is not overelaborate with too much inlay work - instead it has simple MoP dot inlay fret markers, with a star inlay at the 5th fret, and a star motif on the headstock.
I like the fact this banjo does not have the makers name emblazoned on the headstock - it's very understated and classy.

Frailers in Runcorn, UK were good to deal with. Helpful over the phone in making a selection, and very quick with delivery too. The banjo arrived in good order as described, with a hand written note from Dave asking me to call him if there was a problem. There was even a complimentary pack of strings in the case, in the event that any strings were broken in transit.
I think the warranty is the standard Gold Tone Limited Lifetime, but I'm not sure.

Customer Service

Components

The fretboard is beautiful and the neck is easy to play being a little wider than normal.
The flesh hoop was bent slightly, but makes no difference at all.
The banjo was supposed to come with a Remo Rennaisance head, but instead has a Weatherking head.
Don't really know the difference, and the Weatherking sounds great.

Very good quality components as far as I can make out.

I would certainly recommend this banjo for those looking for a frailing banjo with an old time sound, but not too soft and great volume levels if required.
I paid a little too much, but the price included a top quality Gold Tone branded TKL hard case, specifically designed for a 12" pot and overnight shipping.
So, looking at it that way, the banjo may only have cost me about £550.
I love this banjo, and would definitely get another if it needed to be replaced.

I wanted a bright sound as well but without the thin, tinny, tone that usually comes with bright. There had to be excellent note separation and sparkle over the entire neck. The banjo that Cliff built for me has all of this plus an extraordinary response to the lightest touch.

This is a custom Calico. I ordered it with Brazilian Rosewood instead of maple and Tenbrooks pot instead of Deering 06. The tone is incredible. It has that richness and depth that I have come to appreciate in my Gibsons, but the Kruger tone ring adds an amazing purity that is VERY pleasing. This banjo is suited to all types of music depending on how you play it.

Now I'm Obsessive compulsive about my set-up, but I didn't have do ANYTHING AT ALL. The set-up was perfeted by Janet Davis herself at Janet Davis Music. Nice and low action hieght, no buzzing or noises, perfectly even head tension. The only change I made was swapping out the SS bridge JDM place (to replace the stock Deering bridge) with one another "Mystery" bridge that I had and it was the perfect touch.

The super-rare Brazilian Rosewood they used is old growth lumber, not stump wood that is often used. The finish and polish is flawless. I choose to upgrade to Abalone inlays and I'm so glad I did so: very colorful. The inlays are completely flush with the ebony fingerboard which is extremely smooth and flawless. The binding, the fret finishing--all absolutely flawless.

I've dealt with Deering on and off for over 10 years. They've always been there for me, even while I wasn't a Deering owner. My first resonator banjo was a used Deering Deluxe Custom and I was given lot's of support when I owned it. However, it did not need any service at all.
My new Deering Calico has a lifetime warranty that only applies to the original owner which will always be me while I'm alive!

Customer Service

10

Components

The tuners are the smoothest around (I believe their customized Gotoh tuners). The tailpiece is the factory Deering model which is their improvement over the presto. The flange is the lighter-weight Tenbrooks version and the unplated Kruger tone ring is the culmination of the tone ring evolution as far as I'm concerned. It's cast in Switzerland by the Ruetschi foundry who's been casting and repairing bells and sculptures for over 600 years.

I highly recommend Deering for you next banjo whether it's used, new or custom. Mine was a very personal combination of preferences and is thus my custom Calico is very unique. If it were stolen, I'd really be at a loss, both financially and emotionally. I am insuring it, but if were lost, I'd order another one, just like it. the wood species may have to be different however due to scarcity.
Deering has vastly improved on their design and tone and this is largely due to by the development of their Tenbrooks tone system.

It seems pretty bright and gives the Deering Goodtime competition for an affordable price. I am glad I got an open back instrument. Unfortunately, there were not enough banjo technicians at the store so I took it to Music Folk (www.musicfolk.com) for head tightening, nut repair, and bridge moving. I intend to have spikes added soon. It's great for Scruggs style picking and clawhammer alike. I will use either a Barcus-Berry discq or Dean Markley dot pickup with it. I intend to learn clawhammer.

Sound Rating

10

Setup

I could not afford a hard shell case at the store, went with an electric guitar gigbag, which suits my needs, but would rather have had a Superior (TM) banjo gig bag. I suggest buying one wherever you can. As for the setup, move the bridge toward the tailpiece, adjust the head tighter and the action lower. I would suggest the Barcus-Berry Discq (it's a dot pickup) because you can stick it on near the bridge and stick the plugin jack on the rim or run it outside a resonator to the body and stick it on. I give it a 9 simply because I had to go elsewhere for the setup and Guitar Center could not do it.

Setup Rating

9

Appearance

It is very plain and a light mahogany, no flaws. No custom work was done nor will be done. I do have a penchant for some wacky stickers on my gig bags though. :-) For instance, I would not use a Crybaby pedal with a banjo so stuck one on the gig bag. I am learning to leave things be and simple, to avoid inlay work.

Appearance Rating

I believe overall it will be fine on its own. My only concern is that I believe it should have come with spikes for the price of the instrument, maybe $20.00 more for those added. The one thing I would change would be strap hooks or pegs independent of the brackets. That is a concern for durability, pulling too hard on the strap, etc.

it has a very full sound, but is rather heavy. I like the fact that it has 6 strings, durable head, but wish overall I had gone with a 5 string to play with tunings. It does not hold its tuning all that well in my humble opinion if tuned to standard guitar tuning. It is fine for strumming or picking, not clawhammer because you can't do drop thumb. I am amazed to even find Star Fire listed here! The instrument has strap hooks which seemed to stay in pretty well, except for 1 time when a strap came off and I had to repair it.

This is the Goodtime with resonator and dark finish. JUst added to their catalog this year, and I have not seen too many around yet. The sound is great. I think it holds its own with any banjo under $1000. I play bluegrass style, but to small audiences, in a small band or alone. So I don't need the punching power of a brass tone ring. The Deering Goodtime family have a rich, mellow sound compared to others in this range. Loud enough for me. Maybe not loud enough for a stage band - the only weakness?

All set up and ready to play, except that the strings were shot. Must have been hanging in a busy shop and got tried out a lot. I cleaned up the metal parts a bit. After the warranty ends I will replace the tuners with planetary ones. That will make it look like a more expensive Deering model.

I shopped around for 2 years, and this was the best deal I saw. I almost got a Gold Tone Bg250f instead, but I think the DG2C tone is even better. The Gold Tone is a nice banjo for the money, probably louder and sharper sounding, and a little better looking. But for my needs, the DG2C has the bet sound. The only better sounding banjos I heard were well over a grand. I'd only spend that kind of money if I were a pro.

Sound

I was looking for a banjo that sounded different from my others and listened to a lot of them. When I heard the Phantom, I decided that one was the one for me. The tone is different, hard to describe- crisp, rich, woody, organic? I don't know a good word to use but it's wonderful. I play mostly classical and new age like music on this banjo and the tone for that is wonderful.

I have found that by cranking down the head I can quickly and easily change the tone to more of a bluegrass sound and i have done that and the banjo really cracks and carries.

I really like that the banjo is so easily adjustable and versatile.

Setup

I had a few issues with the banjo when I first got it. I tried to work them out myself but couldn't so I contacted Tom Nechville and Al Price and they were extremely helpful (more about that below). I ended up taking it to a luthier and he fixed it right up for me in a very short time and I have no issues or concerns at all now. New banjos sometimes need a tweak or two, no big deal.

The only reason I would bring another banjo with me to a job is if I were going to be playing both traditional and classical music. The Phantom is reliable, consistant and I don't foresee any trouble with it.

I bought the banjo from Turtle HIll and contacted Dave via phone and internet. Dave is a first rate standup guy and I recommend him to everyone. Dave was approachable by email, answered in a timely manner, was factual and honest, and he even gave me a free capo and hand delivered my banjo to me due to a convenient situation. I spent an hour or so with him and enjoyed it very much and I look forward to buying from him again.

When I had a few small issues with my Phantom, I contacted Tom Nechville and Al Price and they were very helpful and informative about my problem. Tom made me a custom height bridge and Al had a new head sent to me. Both did this without asking for money first and trusted my honesty and integrity and THAT is not something you see every day. I completely trust them and applaud them for it. In the end, my issues were cleared up completely and I truly cannot imagine better customer service than what I got from both Turtle Hill and Nechville. Fantastic people and fantastic service!

If this banjo was stolen I would call Dave at Turtle Hill and have him order me another just like it. I love the tone and playability.

I suggest if anyone is considering a Phantom to try and hear one in person, they are a little different sounding from other banjos. I for one count that as a big plus too. In my opinion, variety is the spice of life in terms of tone.

Sound

This banjo is great for old-time music. It has a real traditional sound.I only have it for 6 weeks but it got to meet other instruments for the first time last night and it performed brilliantly....it really cut through without being one bit harsh.
It had nylgut strings on it when I got it first and I was initially dissappointed in it.I persisted for 5 weeks but it sounded like a plastic basin to me.....tubby in the extreme. The thin 12" pot probably contributes to this aswell. As someone who listens primarily to 20th century recordings this is not the sound I associate with or love about the banjo. It was a bit 19th century-sounding for me (or what I'd imagine 19th century banjos sounded like!)
Anyway, the nylgut strings are obviously what I didn't like because when I put the steel ones on it was a different story. It now has a warm sustain and the tone is somewhere between tinny and tubby.....just right really! If a banjo can sound 'friendly' this one does.
I should also mention that I've stuffed a sponge under the skin to soften the overtones. This obviously lowers the volume (and I'd prefer to not have to) but it's not absolutely necessary, it's just a preference.
It's a half-fretted model and the slides sound great.I think the slides were better with the nylgut strings though.

Sound Rating

The man at Zepp was very good to deal with but I had requested that the action be lowered.Maybe this was an oversight but it was not done when it arrived!
I subsequently had it lowered as it was set very high.

Appearance

I like the look of this banjo as it is very plain.I'd prefer an ebony veneer on the headstock though and I'm not mad about the fact that the maple rim is painted black (but the maple would probably clash with the cherry neck). The cherry neck on my banjo is really beautiful....really straight grain and a little knot in the wood is a nice feature. The Dobson heel looks great......beautifully crafted neck.
The finish seems to be a natural satin finish. It feels great to touch and it looks great. However,I feel a more traditional laquer finish would probably be more durable. The inlay is basic too.....just dots on the fretboard(I think they're MOP).The tuners look well....they're black.....don't know if they're ebony or plastic?
This banjo is honest. It'does what it says on the tin'.If you want fancy look elsewhere. The workmanship here has gone into the sound and that's fine by me.It's hard to give it a rating as a result.

I rang Kevin in the early stages of my research.I was initially interested in his M200 model which he told me is no longer in production(although it's still on the website).Anyway, even knowing that I was no longer a potential customer he was a complete gentleman. He was very helpful. This banjo has a lifetime warranty so absolutely full marks here.

Components

I know gotoh tuners have a good name and they look great but as I've mentioned I find them shaky.Planetary tuners would be an idea.I'd probably prefer if the rim and neck were made of the same material. The no-knot tailpiece could also be upgraded and I wouldn't think the brackets and tension hoop are top quality but again its hard to rate this....if the components were better it wouldn't cost $1025!

For the price I paid I couldn't recommend it enough. It's famous for being a quality, affordable banjo and that's what it is.The exchange rate really helped too!I'm just starting on the fretless so it's perfect for me.If it was stolen tomorrow I'd buy another and I wouldn't have to re-mortgage the house to do it.I'd also be confident the replacement would sound just as good.I got off to a slow start but I'm growing to love this banjo. It doesn't have the punch my Reiter Regent has but it sounds more earthy.I don't prefer either one. They both offer something different. This banjo delivers on sound....the most important thing.Check out the video files on the Zepp Music website for demos....they're great.
It's unfair to compare it to more expensive banjos. For the money it's 10/10.

Needed some minor tweaks, but it was the dead of summer so things could have been loose from the heat/humidity.

This banjo is the Ron Stewart Signature model with the straight grain maple neck. This banjo has that sought after 'prewar' sound. It rings like a bell up the neck and growls like a tiger at the bottom. Each note rings clear with a slight 'zing'. You get the feeling that each note is encapsulated in a bundle of perfectly orchestrated tonal symphony. Its actually hard to describe but extremely pleasing to hear and play. I get this amazement every time I pick it that somehow this instrument just knows how to bring out just the right tones to create a perfectly balanced sound. Volume is exceptionally even up and down the neck. By adjusting your picking style and hand position, you are able to mold the tones in countless ways. This truly is a remarkable instrument.

10

Setup

The action was setup just like I like it. The action is not too low and not too high. It actually plays very well, right out of the case. Warren suggested that I check the head tension after shipping. I tweaked it just a bit as the head settled in shipping. This is normal and not a problem. The head is now tuned to about a G# where it has come alive.

Setup Rating

10

Appearance

This model has what is called a distressed finish. I must say that I had mixed emotions about putting out the money for a new banjo that looks old. However, I can't stop admiring its beauty. It doesn't look worn out, it just looks like it is asking to be played as opposed to simply hanging on a wall to be looked at. Personally, I like to play my banjos. Having said that, this one has a unique beauty that will get people asking questions about it. When the mandolin player in our band saw this banjo, he thought I had picked up a vintage instrument. When I told him that it was only a couple weeks out of the shop, he was amazed. I really like the appearance. The speed neck is simply wonderful to play. The inlay work is beautiful. Very nice interpretation of the flying eagle design. I absolutely love the peg head shape and inlay design.

I can't see any reliability concerns. The parts are the best. The Keith tuners are without equal. Sounds Great. I wanted a bluegrass banjo [but that could be played in different styles] this is perfect. Not overly loud but cuts through very well. It has a distinct sound. Not a Gibson or Stelling [ maybe a little Deering type]

Sound Rating

9

Setup

Setup from Gryphon was very good. Just out of the box it played well. Action low- but loud. I can't think of any changes. Maybe a new bridge. ONE annoying thing is that the 4th string, when bent, goes off the fretboard. It was a used banjo and maybe the bridge is too wide or using Crow spacing. but it plays great -but may not be the orig. bridge. I may have a moon bridge installed. but it sounds so good I hate to mess with it. It did have a 5th sting capo [removed] IF I had known I would have replaced it and not put in the extra spikes.

I like the 'silverspun-no hole tone ring' -its somewhere between a white lady sound and mastertone. It does sound like the old Bacon silver belle tone rings in their top of the line OLD banjos. To me this banjo is ideal for old-time music. It's resonant but clear and rich with not too many overtones. While it's not as warm as my 1890s no-namer it's certainly not harsh and there's no need to stick a sock in this banjo! It's a very responsive banjo.....chucks and plucks really come off clear. It can be played loud or soft. It's not to bright sounding but that 5th string really sings...punchy.I can't find fault with the sound of this banjo and sound is the most important thing. It's quite tinny and metallic sounding but it is a banjo after all.

Sound Rating

10

Setup

The Music Emporium carried out my instructions to the letter by lowering the action by paring the bridge by about 1/16" but I was getting some buzzing on the 3rd string (and on the 2nd and 3rd when in d tuning).I think this is a common problem with the 3rd as it's quite slack.Anyway, I replaced it with an identical new bridge(I think it's a Snuffy Smith) and the 3rd only buzzes slightly when plucked very hard.Anyway,I've no-one to blame for this but myself.
I don't like the way the tension hoop is proud. It's about 2/16" higher than the head.I'd prefer if it was flush. The notch cut out of the tension hoop at the scoop is also a minor complaint.I've hit it with my finger a few times.I'm sure I'll learn the hard way!

I love the look of the old Vega Regent models and this is practically identical. It's not flashy but I don't like flashy. The Vega-style headstock is beautifully done and it has the all-important star!I think all the inlay is MOP....the fretboard has dots at the 3rd,5th,7th,10th,12th,15th and 17th.The two-piece Maple neck with ebony strip is a beauty.Ebony heelcap and rosewood rimcap are also nice features. The finish is a traditional satin laquer finish beautifully executed. The planetary tuners are great but I don't like the plasticy look of them...they'd be nice in ebony or ivoroid.I like the look of the bracket band on the old Vega Whyte Ladies but I'm sure that's easier said than done! This Regent model seems to have everything Bart's Whyte Lady has except that ugly Gryphon on the headstock!

The Planetary tuners hold fast.I'd highly recommend them but as I already mentioned I don't like the plasticy look of them. The Waverly tailpiece seems to do its job.The Whyte Lady tone ring lives up to it's reputation if it is primarily responsible for the sound.I wonder if I replaced the five-star head with a skin head would the sound be warmer but I don't really see any reason to do this as it sounds great as is and I wouldn't want to sacrifice any of that gentle brightness. As I said earlier I'd love if there was a bracket band on it.I think Bart's Deluxe WLs have this feature.Nice thick pot but I think I'd prefer hex-bolts to hold the 24 L-shoes in place.
